Parents and Professionals: Problem Spotting vs Problem Solving

Your house is on fire. Do you first figure out the source of the fire and then run, or do you just run? I guess that may depend upon how bad the fire is but I see a lot of cases of diagnosing where we could instead be problem solving our young persons behaviour.

Whether it’s problems in the classroom or at home, with behaviour, anxiety related issues or communication problems, we might find that by getting creative and thinking of ways and work arounds to resolve the issues they face, we stand a better chance of chaining things than we ever would by putting all our efforts into seeking a diagnosis.

  1. I think the mindset for solving the problem is important but equally important is to get to the root of the problem to stagger it from reoccurrence.
