Parents And Professionals: How To Help A ‘Slow Learner’


The term ‘slow learner’ is a misrepresentation (and poor terminology) of what is often going on inside the mind of a child or teenager who isn’t keeping up either academically or developmentally with his/her peers. It’s also one of those labels that can be difficult to shift.

But as any early years professional knows, sometimes, a baby who is mastering walking, will be delayed at talking, because some children are ‘busy’ focusing on one skill and can’t yet take on another (as I’ll demonstrate with my atrocious juggling!) Sometimes, all they need to catch up, is a little bit of time and headspace….
